Following a major recall this August 4, 2022, you may want to recheck your power tools. With over 1.4 million tools recalled, and 9 people already injured — both DeWalt and Makita are recalling devices that might cut you while in use.
The recalled DeWalt device is their 12-inch Sliding Compound Miter Saws, which sold millions of units across the US. The recalled Makita devices include a variety of cordless hedge trimmers, which sold only about 2,600 units in the US.
DeWalt 12-inch Sliding Compound Miter Saw
This week, DeWalt announced the recall of 12-inch sliding compound miter saws. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) posted the announcement on August 4, 2022.
Despite the power tool’s robust design, the rear safety guard is susceptible to breaking or detaching. In such a scenario, projectiles could be thrown at the user and bystanders. In addition, they run the risk of coming into contact with the power tool’s saw blade, which is clearly quite harmful.
A total of 1,364,000 12-inch sliding compound miter saws were sold in the US by DeWalt. So if you have purchased a miter saw from this brand recently, you might want to consider checking the model number. The recall involves the following model numbers:
- DWS779
- DWS780
- DHS790
On the saw’s nameplate, you’ll find the model number. Only models with date codes 2019 04 through 2022 04 are affected.
On DWS779 and DWS780 models, date codes appear on the black plastic motor end cap next to the nameplate. In the DHS790 model, the date code is located on the outside of the yellow plastic housing next to the batteries. In addition, the recall only applies to saws without a green dot on the nameplate or a black dot on the arm.
Lowe’s, Home Depot, and other hardware stores nationwide have carried the power tool models involved in the recall. Other websites, such as Amazon, Lowe’s, and others, may also have offered them for sale online.
Makita’s Cordless Hedge Trimmer Recall
The Makita power tool involved in the August 4th recall is an electric device made for cutting. Amongst the recall, there are quite a few cordless hedge trimmers models that pose a risk of injury to users. Makita has since announced the recall here.
In this instance, the teal guard on the Makita hedge trimmer’s shear blade is missing. Due to this malfunction, the trimmer has an increased chance of causing injury while in use.
These power tool products involved in the recall were sold nationwide from February 2022 through June 2022 in a variety of home improvement and hardware stores. You may have also purchased this recalled device online via Home Depot or Amazon.

In contrast to DeWalt’s power tools, Makita’s hedge trimmer has yet to cause any injuries.
